Granule displacement happens when the impact of hailstones knocks the granules off the shingles. This loss of protective granules exposes the underlying asphalt to harmful sun rays.
SIGNS OF WIND DAMAGE
Visible Granule Loss: It is normal for a new roof to experience some granule loss. However, storm damage typically causes granule loss in distinct horizontal lines, indicating a broken shingle seal. Granules are lost as shingles flap in the wind and make contact with other surfaces.
Damaging winds are classified as those exceeding 50 miles per hour. Winds from severe thunderstorms or hurricanes are often referred to as “straight-line” winds to distinguish them from tornadoes. Wind damage accounts for more than half of all severe weather incidents.
Missing Shingles: Shingles that are already cracked or peeling are highly susceptible to being blown off when wind speeds surpass 60 miles per hour. While roofing manufacturers often cover severe winds in their warranties, the estimated wind speeds a roof can withstand is based on a new, well-maintained roof.
