Popular & Durable

durability of asphalt shingles

With their obvious thickness and dimensional features, architectural shingles are usually guaranteed for at least 30 years. Additionally, because of their features and resistance to wind speeds, hail, and fungal growths, they are less likely to need replacement over the life of a house.

Home Value

The use of architectural shingles raises the value of the a home. With high-level architectural shingle materials and proper installation, a home can easily retain or increase its value.

The aesthetics of dimensional shingle roofing has encouraged homeowners to improve the look of their homes from the top down. Homeowners are choosing architectural shingles because of their quality, effectiveness, overall appeal, increased value and cost.

In additional to offering a variety of style choices, asphalt shingles are also widely available throughout the U.S. and Canada, and are easy to install, making them an attractive option for professional roofing contractors to offer to their customers. And while getting a new roof is by no means an inexpensive project, asphalt shingles are among the most affordable options available.

In fact, if an existing roof deck (the structural surface beneath the roofing system) is in good condition, new asphalt shingles can even be installed over older shingles, reducing the need (and cost) of a tear off of the old roofing.

The team at Skyline Exteriors & Construction has been replacing asphalt roofs in the Barrington, Naperville & Chicago, IL area for a long time. We work with you to get the best roof possible.

What are the 3 types of asphalt shingles?

While 3-tab used to dominate the market, dimensional shingles are the most common type installed on roofs today.

Luxury style shingles are just as heavily marketed as dimensional but are almost double the price. Continue reading to learn how the types of asphalt shingles match up on key factors such as cost, warranties, and lifespan.

3-tab asphalt shingles

3-tab asphalt shingles lay flat and get their name from the 3 tabs that are on each shingle strip. Also known as strip shingles (due to the cut of the shingle) or simply strips, 3-tab asphalt shingles are the original and most basic asphalt shingles. They are made from a single layer of asphalt and have a very flat appearance that typically offers a slate look. Since they are made from a single layer, they generally weigh and cost less than other asphalt shingles.

Prior to designer shingles being introduced in the 1980s, 3-tab asphalt shingles or strip shingles, were the predominant roofing shingle in the market. Today, 3-tab asphalt shingles are used most often used by home builders that manufacture inexpensive homes, or by homeowners who are replacing roofing shingles on residences that already have strip shingles on the roof.

Dimensional asphalt shingles

Also known as architectural or laminate shingles, dimensional shingles are the most prevalent asphalt shingles.

These products are manufactured with two or more layers of asphalt that are fused together for a thicker and richer multi-dimensional appearance, and are engineered to replicate the wood shake and natural slate roofing aesthetics.

Dimensional shingles are typically heavier than strip shingles, and have improved warranty protection.

Apart from being shingle ‘heavyweights’ that offer premium protection for weathering, luxury shingles are stunning to look upon, presenting the highest quality, coloration, and dimensionality.

These products offer the most realistic representation of the old-world wood shake and quarried slate roofing.

Roof Replacement
There are plenty of sensible reasons to replace your roof other than obvious leaks and holes. If you live in an area that gets hit especially hard by hail, high winds, or other types of storms/bad weather, there’s a good chance the constant thrashing your roof is taking has left it worn down to the point where it may just be more cost-effective to do a full replacement than keep up with spot repairs. If it’s just been a long time since you’ve had your roof replaced, the materials currently protecting your home may be far less effective and efficient compared to newer products on the market.
Roof Repair
Whether your roof needs minor repairs, or major ones, you can always count on our seasoned roof repair technicians at Skyline Exteriors to get the job done right. We can handle damage caused by severe storms/weather, wildlife infestations, flashing and ventilation mistakes caused by careless installation, general wear and tear from lack of proper upkeep or age, poor landscaping, insufficient gutter drainage, and anything else that might be going on.
